White 40GB PS3 Arriving in Japan
Sony has announce that they will be releasing a white and black 40GB PS3 in Japan on November 11th. This PS3 will be different from previous models in a few way. First it will lose all backwards compatibility by losing the memory card slot and SACD reading function. Also on the chopping block are 2 of the 4 USB ports. It will also come bundled with the Dualshock 3 controller. This bundle will retail in Japan for $341
Some reports are saying that the US is getting something similar on November 2nd for $399. This leads me to ask the question: Do you really care about backwards compatibility? I can say that I don’t. I have a PS2, and I really like it. I don’t need my PS3 to be my PS2, and if it means that it comes at a lower cost to me, then I am all for ripping the backwards compatibility out of a system. I wish that Sony could give me the PS3 at a low cost with backwards compatibility, but I don’t think that it is a deal breaker for me if my PS3 only plays PS3 games.
I could really be in a minority on this one, but I am interested in hearing some other opinions so let me know.

I agree with Stuart on this one. I really like the backwards compatibility on the PS2, But I want a PS3 to play PS3 games. I already own a PS2 and can play all my PS2 and PS1 games on there. Saving a few bucks and loosing the backwards compatibility is worth it in my opinion. In the end all I want is a PS3.

I’m not cool with this, that’s for sure. I mean, you SAY you don’t mind the BC loss, but honestly: which one are you going to buy? I think you’ll agree it’s going to be the 60gb or 80gb.
Honestly, though, what the Hell is up with all the different models nowadays? In 5 years, what will it mean to say “I own a PS3?” It’s disgusting to think that the response will have to be “Which one?”
